AdSense-well: The Singapore Success Story

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

With all the hype and enthusiasm surrounding AdSense, it is perhaps laughable that not many in Singapore actually turn to this method to generate a form of revenue for their website. Why is this so? Perhaps the reason can be explained by the fact that Singaporeans are typically cautious of earning any revenue from the internet. This, despite the fact that more than 80% of the country is connected. For all the bandwidth and connection speeds available, the average Singaporean only uses it to surf the web or to blog one or two posts.

I signed up for AdSense in 2003 and by learning the simple tricks and also putting myself in the shoes of the visitor, have managed to earn a decent amount of revenue to supplement my income. The satisfying thing is that many of the visitors to my site actually feel that they have gained something useful. This has really made me wonder what I should do to promote AdSense to fellow Singaporeans.

One thing about AdSense is that you need a site, filled with content. Now many people blog over here, but they feel that its just for them to keep a reference to their life. Little do they know that they are actually sitting on a goldmine! When I started out, not many help was available and I really had to learn all on my own. The good thing was that because of that, I knew what not to do, because I realized what worked and what didn’t.

• Banners – the banner which we have come to recognize and avoid seems to be one of the most popular with the people starting out. That is the biggest mistake that one can make. Think about it, if you will consciously avoid clicking on a banner ad, wouldn’t the rest of the connected world?

• Chameleon – A chameleon always tries to blend itself with its surrounding, to avoid being caught or detection. The same should go for the ad. Blending in with the rest of your site makes sense, because you want people to actually click on your ads. Sticking out like a sore thumb rarely works, no matter what others tell you.

• Content – You hear this mantra all the time, “Content is King”. There is a certain truth in it, Google being Google, appreciates fresh content, and if you would want to actually have some semblance of traffic, it would do you good to add content on a consistent basis. Granted that its almost impossible to get original content out daily, do get hold of some free articles that are published by like-minded writers who like to put their linguistic skills to good use.

• Clicking – Clicking on your own ad is the surest way to get kicked out of the program. Do not even think that Google will hear your explanation, for they don’t. As it is with their closely guarded PageRank algorithm, it also holds true for how they monitor your account. Therefore, do not even attempt to test their system.

Of course, there are still other considerations to take note of in order to succeed and earn a decent revenue. However, those that are listed above do tend to be the basics of AdSense. And like a good building, you need to get the foundations right before you even attempt to build a skyscraper. So I advise you to get the basics in motion first, and then we’ll talk about raking in the cash.

QSR Quick Service – Fast Food Restaurants Labor Situation in United States

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

One of the major complaints in the QSR Quick Service-Fast Food Restaurants Industry is the deplorable Labor Situation. In United States teen labor has become somewhat slim on ethical standards, showing up on time, drug use (both recreational and problematic), work ethic and trainability. Who can we blame? Well we can start by blaming ourselves. What happened? Well it is the latch key kid syndrome, lack of school funding and discipline and many other obvious issues. The ages between 17 and 28 the normal ages of employees of Fast Food Restaurants have a lot to be desired in the inherent customer service realm and desirability for employment.

I had the opportunity to discuss this today with a gentleman who had at one time ran 17 KFCs and finally could not take it anymore and retired. His son picking up the bug is a Manager of a Pizza Place in TN who makes about 50K per year as a manager. Which is pretty good, but that is what needs to be paid out when you find great people. One lady in the Metro area was receiving 5% gross bonus on top of salary and in one of the largest grossing stores in the state and took home 100K per year as a manager. If you look at the current problems in QSRs and we all have seen it, having our hamburgers smashed, or Western Bacon Cheese Burger drowned in special sauce where you could not even tell what was in it. We have all had the food jumbled up, freedom fries upside down spilled in the bag and generally a lackadaisical attitude and disrespect towards us as customers. I assure you folks, this is not what Carl Karcher, Ray Kroc, Tom Monahan had in mind when they built their businesses on reputation and delivery of clean, fast, quality and consistent service and food. No then why is it that a perfect system like this is prostituted and cannot get a good enough laborer to respect the establishment or reputation built on years of public trust, image, brand recognition and good service? Part of the problem is the labor supply.

Sure much of the QSR industry has gone through changes over the years, increased competition, encroachment of franchise companies who were suppose to be on their own team and a myriad of other issues from beef, chicken, paper product costs fluctuations to increased minimum wage laws, OSHA standards, ADA retrofitting and insurance costs for slip and fall. We understand these issues and have found ways to service these QSRs by assisting with out sourced services.

I bring this up because the company I founded occasionally works in this industry, offering cleaning services to these stores since they cannot get the labor to get it done.

http://www.concretewashguys.com/md.shtml

Food safety is a huge issue and bacteria are on everyone’s mind. When people have less spend able income in their pockets they can afford less fast food. During the last recession many of the QSR owners had slow sales. Some cashed out early others braved the storm, currently with fuel prices up folks have less money in their pocket and opt more often than not to by-pass the fast food restaurant on the way home or make much smaller orders. We will see what happens in the future meanwhile many small companies, which do services will be in high demand. Hopefully these small business service companies can assist these multi-unit franchise owners and Corporate Store owners with the biggest problem of competent and hard working, reliable labor. The issue is also that those small service companies are also challenged for labor. Many QSRs are turning to older folks for their labor supply.

Tips for Starting A Small Business, Part I

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Have you been dreaming of getting out of the rat race and starting your own small business? If so, your dream has become a reality for thousands of people across the U.S.

New small business owners often have similar questions such as Will I be successful? Do I need a mentor? What help is available? What will this cost me?

The fact of the matter is, those who are successful in starting their small business have carefully planned for each phase of their business’s life. There are definite steps potential entrepreneurs should follow to increase their chance of success. Here are 3 tips to assist them in this process:

Tip #1: Decide on your potential business. Ask questions such as:

1. Is there is a marketplace?

2. Can a profit be made?

3. How much competition is currently in the specific market place?

Tip #2: Do careful research. This is highly important and can prevent potential small business owners from making costly mistakes. Some basic questions to ask are:

1. What niche or void will my business fill?

2. What services or products will be sold?

3. Is my idea practical, and will it fill a need?

4. Can a demand be created for the business?

Once the potential small business owner has determined their business is feasible, other questions to think about are:

1. What skills and experience do I bring to the business?

2. What will be my legal structure?

3. What financing will I need?

4. Where will my business be located?

Those looking to work from home should answer additional questions such as :

1. Is there enough space in my home?

2. Can the business be run well and successfully from the home?

3. Can I deal with not working around other people?

When potential small business owners are able to answer the questions above and feel comfortable with the outcome, this will naturally lead then to the next tip:

Tip #3: Develop a business plan. This is crucial and there is help available for this important step. For example, The Small Business Administration (SBA) provides free or low-cost resources to help potential small business owners plan, finance, and manage their business. The resources the SBA offers includes free, online courses which takes entrepreneurs through the steps of starting a business, assistance in writing business plans, and guidance in how to raise capital. These resources are easily available online at http://www.sba.gov, or at the local SBA office in towns and cities across the U.S. The SBA?s Answer Desk can also be reached at 1-800-U ASK SBA.

Another great source from the SBA is there SCORE program. This stands for the “The Service Corps of Retired Executives”. This is a free e-mail business course that includes informative sections on federal and state agencies and links to other business resources. Find the SCORE program by going to www.score.org.

Starting a small business and being successful with it are dreams of many people. However, it does require careful planning and research. If done right, one can indeed leave the “rat race” behind and embark on a life they have always dreamed about. Why not start now?

A Hidden Oriental Jewel: “100% Chinese Hand-Made Silk Embroidery”

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Introduction

Do you know what “silk embroidery is? Do you know what it looks like? Many people I come across in the U.S. are either unaware or unfamiliar with what silk embroidery is. Moreover, for the few who are familiar with this specialized Chinese skill, I have discovered that they do not have a true knowledge and appreciation for this fine Chinese art form. Thus, the implication can be made that “silk embroidery” is truly a “Hidden Oriental Jewel” that has been under appreciated in the West due mainly to the fact that the common person is ignorant of the time, effort, and skill required to create high-quality “silk embroidery” works. Hence, the purpose of this article will be to inform and educate you (whether the art lover or the common person) on: What is silk embroidery?, How it is made?, How to appreciate it?, etc. My hope is that you will acquire an appreciation for the uniqueness and value of this oft-overlooked Chinese art. Whether an art lover or not, I think you will come to appreciate the value of this “Hidden Oriental Jewel.”

What is Silk Embroidery?

Silk embroidery is a type of Oriental wall art that results from the traditional Chinese skill of pulling fine strands of colored silk through a canvas to create a beautiful work of art. The most common way to enjoy silk embroidery is as a framed, wall-hanging object. Hence, it is ideal as a gift, collectible, home decoration, souvenir, or office piece. The art of skill embroidery originated in China and has been practiced there for over 3,800 years. It reached a high level early in the Qing and Han dynasties, with silk and silk embroidery being the main products transported along the ancient Chinese Silk Road.

China was one of the first countries to transform embroidery into an advanced art form. The use of special embroidery techniques and styles sets apart Chinese embroidery from embroidery created in other parts of the world. In the past, embroidery skills were considered to be an essential skill every woman was to possess. A woman who could create a high-quality embroidery piece was admired and well-respected. Women from rich families took on embroidery as a hobby while those from poor families did it for a living. Today, high-quality embroidery works are treated on the same level as the best Chinese paintings and Tang/Song Dynasty poems

How To Appreciate Silk Embroidery?

Whether you’re an “art lover” or the “common person,” you’ll come to appreciate the value of silk embroidery once you learn of the skill and effort that goes into creating each piece. To create a high quality piece, an artist must split a single silk thread into several thinner threads. It can be split into 12 to 48 thinner strands – depending on how fine the artist wants to be with his/her piece. The embroiderer then stitches layer after layer using threads of a variety of colors to reach the final wonderful effect. Embroiderers are known to take frequent breaks – every 10 to 15 minutes – to rest their eyes due to the strenuous nature of their work.

Due to the labor-intensiveness of the work, some larger and more intricate pieces of embroidery may require a year to a year and a half to complete by an artist or group of artists. Those works sell for thousands of dollars, – which is reasonable – considering the skill and time involved in creating the work. Of course, smaller pieces are available that are of high quality yet sell for much less.

Four Types of Silk Embroidery
The adoption of different needling methods through the years has resulted in four distinctive embroidery styles in China:

1) “Su” embroidery of Jiangsu Province – known for its delicacy and elegance, this style is usually very simple, highlighting a main theme. Its stitching is smooth, dense, thin, neat, even, delicate and harmonious. The thin thread is divided into up to 48 strands that are barely visible to the naked eye. Su embroidery is where double-sided embroidery originated. Su embroidery products were sent to participate in the Panama World Fair in 1915.

2) “Xiang” embroidery of Hunan Province – became the main craft in places around Changsha, capital city of Hunan Province, in the Qing Dynasty. Xiang embroidery was developed from Hunan folk embroidery methods, but it also drew on the skills of Su embroidery and Yue embroidery. This method uses loose colorful threads to embroider the pattern with the stitches being not as neat as those of other embroidery styles. The various colored threads are mixed together, showing a gradual change in color with a rich and harmonious tone. Designs on Xiang embroidery mostly derive from traditional Chinese paintings of landscapes, human figures, flowers, birds and animals. The most common designs on Xiang embroidery are lions and tigers. The tigers appear strong and bold, revealing their power and menace as a king of animals. Xiang embroidery won the best award in the Torino World Fair in Italy in 1912 and the First Award in the Panama World Fair in 1933.

3) “Yue” embroidery of Guangdong Province – is rich and complicated in content with bright colors and strong decorative effects. The embroidery is smooth and even. One type, gold and silver cushion embroidery, creates a magnificent three-dimensional effect. Yue embroidery has a wide range of designs, the most common ones being birds worshipping the sun, dragons and phoenixes.

4) “Shu” embroidery of Sichuan Province – are mostly found in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province. They are made with soft satins and colored threads as the raw materials are embroidered by hand. The varied stitching methods form their unique local style. Designs on Shu embroidery include flowers, birds, landscapes, fish, worms and human figures. The products themselves include quilt covers, pillow covers, back cushions, table cloths, scarves and handkerchiefs.

Western-Style Silk Embroidery

Western-style silk embroidery occurs as the result of an
artist using fine silk strands and needles to accurately
reproduce famous Western-style oil paintings (see figure 2)
- like Van Gogh and Da Vinci. It is truly amazing how an
embroidery artist can literally take silk strands and create
a silk reproduction of a well-known artist’s oil painting.

Essentially, the artist paints with fine silk strands instead
of painting with oil. Think about it . . . does this not perhaps
require more skill than painting with oil itself? Despite the
difference in materials and technique, one thing about a
silk embroidery work is that – from a distance – it can very
much resemble a work of oil painting .

From up close, however, one can notice the colorful
patterns and detailed stitching in a silk embroidery work.
In fact, the colors will appear more bright and lively than
the usually duller colors of an oil painting.

Double-Sided Silk Embroidery

Double-sided silk embroidery is the result of an advanced embroidery technique in which the artist stitches on both sides of a single transparent silk canvas. The embroidered design displays on both the front and back sides of the fabric and does not show the joints in the stitching. Such a work is normally mounted as a screen on a wooden frame. A special feature about double-sided silk embroidery is that you can enjoy the artist’s handiwork from either side of the picture.

How To Mount & Store Silk Embroidery

Mounting a piece of silk embroidery can be an art in and of itself.

Hard Mounting – is most suitable for small to medium-sized embroidery pieces. It involves mounting the piece on a wooden board or frame with a front protective glass. The mounting technique is relatively easy to master.

Soft Mounting – is most suitable for larger pieces. It involves mounting the embroidery piece on a large sheet of paper with a silk border. The mounting technique is very difficult to master. As a result, due to the nature of the mounting technique, a piece with soft mounting is more valuable.

Storing – be sure to wrap embroidery pieces in a container that protects it from moths. Also, embroidery should not be exposed to strong light – especially sunshine – for an extended period of time. Moreover, the environment should be neither too wet nor too dry.

The Jam Packed Market of Gaming Laptop Computers

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Just a while ago it looked like high performance laptops were only being manufactured by a handful of boutique brands and were built to spec, not produced in massive numbers. They were simply like a low qty manufacturing plant. Did not sell in numbers but generated a lot of profit on each unit. The price was just too large to justify buying these types of notebook for people. They were pretty much desktop rivals and the highest performing, best laptop computer you could obtain. Even though that was true I think the prices were so expensive that we would buy laptops that were not so powerful instead. The outlook for gaming laptop computers is now seen by the global players as an amazing opportunity for themselves.

I reckon they would categorise it as a top end notebook and make good amounts of money on these particularly with their economies of scale. This would be a good chance to generate sound revenues for them. Little system builders are unable compete with them in convincing us to buy laptops. What can local retailers possibly do if they are priced out of the market? I reckon once it becomes mass marketed it will not have the same appeal. I think potential purchaser will trust the larger companies more if they purchase something expensive.

I reckon they surely are introducing some of the best laptops out to buy. This is one opportunity the local resellers should utilise to their advantage. Consumers like to be able to configure because they can specify what is most valuable to their needs. Typically many comparisons of the specifications will be carried out and the techies can say what the better notebook actually is. For consumers of this kind, what it can do usually is more important than how the styling is.

All consumers concur that its a great development. In the near future top of the line kit for your money will be the result of this change. I say that a bit hesitantly though as the notebook computer market is a pretty fast paced market. Mobile technology is constantly evolving and the latest products will typically be pricey when it just comes out. Seeing as the established brand companies have already started pushing gaming laptops, I suppose we will have to be patient to witness what happens.

Finding Your ‘WHY!’

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

“Finding these three letters: W. H. Y. will guarantee you ultimate success in your life and in Network Marketing!”

For millions of average Americans, Network Marketing continues to be the best vehicle in building a lucrative business in a short period of time. Two to five years of continuous effort will bring AWESOME results.

Yet when we look at the statitistics, out of an estimated 200,000 Americans joining a Network Marketing company each and every month, approximately 85% of them quit within 90 days from starting their Home-Bases Business.

Why does that happen?

Is the Network Marketing Industry at fault, or is our focus aimed in the wrong direction? How do you maintain your motivation when the first few weeks or months don’t bring the success you expected?

I am here to tell you that it’s our focus that is at fault. Our focus must be on the following questions:

1. “Why” am I doing this business?

2. “Why” did I get started in the first place?

3. What was motivating force that compelled me from the get go?

4. What is my ultimate “success-reason” (or my “Why”) for doing this?

Everyone in this industry has had some powerful motivating force that compelled them to get started. This is the force that caused them to visualize the power of their opportunity. This force, or reasons, are what is called your “Why.” Your “Why” is what you must focus on daily, in order to achieve your ultimate “success-reason” (your “Why”).

The following steps can help all Network Marketers get “Fired-Up” so they can find and achieve their “Why.”

Commit It To Paper!

Go over your reasons in your mind. I mean, really dig deep down inside. Then, write down all the reasons “Why” you started your business.

Were you looking to spend more time with your family? Were you wanting to assist others. Did you want to become financially independent? You must be absolutely clear as to what inspired you to go into business for yourself, and then write it down.

Read It (Your “Why”) Aloud Every Day!

Read it once in the morning when you wake up and once in the evening before going to sleep. This acivity will assist you in sinking your “Why” down deep into your heart and mind. You could even rewrite your “Why” every morning. This will really keep you focused, and keep your mind open for opportunities throughout the day. It is unblievable what this activity can do for your daily motivation. It will move you to action.

Share Your “Why” With Others

Sharing your “Why” with others will put your convictions into overdrive! It will drive you into taking massive action, and will super-charge others along the way.

Always remember that Network Marketing, just like any other business, has its ups and its downs. Talk to any successful marketer and they will all tell you, “Yes! That’s the way it is.”

So, it’s an absolute necessity to continually focus on your “Why.” If you do, you will continue to take super-charged massive action in building a huge Network Marketing business. That business will be the vehicle in which you travel to the ultimate achievement of your “Why.”

Barcelona: 2 Wonderful, Authentic Locations You Won’t Find in the Tourist Guides

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

One of your first priorities when you arrive in Barcelona is bound to be a lazy stroll down that world famous thoroughfair “Las Ramblas”. If you make your way along that fabulous kilometre of sights and sounds looking for a a place to eat, however, you will probably be disappointed. That’s not to say there are no restaurants, of course. There are hundreds, all clamouring for your business. But as with any major city centre the quality of food in such places often leaves a lot to be desired, and the prices are invariably hiked up with that dreaded “tourist tax”. So rather than take your chances there, why not get a little more adventurous and seek out somewhere “off the beaten track”.

Firstly you could try “La Champaera”, which is a true Catalan original. You can get a drink there but it’s not exactly a bar or a pub. You can eat there but it’s like no restaurant you’ve ever been in before. There’s never any music in the place but it has an atmosphere you won’t forget in a hurry. Located in the port area close to “La Barceloneta” metro station it’s nearly always packed with people. When it’s full you have to shout at the bartender to order your food and wait as hundreds of hands pass you your plate!

The name “La Champaera” comes from the drink of choice – Cava. The golden rule is you can get a free glass but only if you eat! Choose from a selection of delicious cured meats, cheeses and “bocadillos” (sandwiches) to accompany your drink and soak up the ambience. If you get there early (before seven) you can avoid some of the later crowds – but for some it’s the raucous atmosphere that makes “La Champaera” so much fun. Either way, it’s a fantastic place to kick start your evening, especially if you’re looking to get into the party mood before you hit the bars and clubs.

If all that sounds a bit to energetic for your liking, don’t worry. Another great choice if you want a taste of authentic Barcelona is a restaurant called “la Cove” which is situated on C/Baluard close to “La Barceloneta” market. It’s been a favourite of local residents for more than twenty years and though it’s hardly the most luxurious or comfortable restaurant in the world, it is steeped in genuine Mediterranean flavour. The food is phenomenal but with just six tables and maximum capacity of thirty people be prepared to wait if you get there too late in the evening.

Visit either of these two locations and you are guaranteed to have a wonderful evening. Just remember to leave your tourist guide at home!
