For starters, there’s spread, meaning lead in points tallied to a losing contestant expected to be defeated by x number points. Schools Seek Higher Caliber Substitute Teachers

Monday, October 20th, 2008

(ARA) – Like many teachers across America, Suzanne Williams seldom finds it easy to take a day away from her classroom for a professional development seminar or even sickness.

Williams, who teaches advanced placement biology at Los Altos High School in northern California, lacked confidence in any substitute teacher’s ability to follow through with her lesson plans and create a productive learning environment in her absence.

“Unfortunately, many of the substitute teachers I’ve worked with were uncomfortable tackling the difficult subject matter of science,” says Williams. “This set my students back significantly and doubled their workload when I returned.”

Williams is not alone in her concerns. She is among 2.75 million permanent teachers nationwide, 10 percent of whom are absent on a given day for professional or personal reasons, according to Utah State University’s Substitute Teaching Institute. It is estimated that 274,000 substitute teachers work in America’s classrooms every day.

Relief came Williams’ way when Los Altos High School turned to Kelly Educational Staffing in 2001 to manage its substitute teacher program. Kelly is among a growing number of staffing companies offering substitute teachers to schools. The company launched its service in 1999 and today serves more than 1,400 public and private schools in 37 states and the United Kingdom.

“Finding quality substitute teachers is a time-consuming, and sometimes frustrating, task,” says George Perez, principal of Los Altos High School. “By partnering with Kelly, we can focus our efforts on the education we provide, while they train, recruit and retain our substitute teachers.”

Early into the relationship between the school and Kelly, a substitute teacher from the company passed a crucial test when Williams needed to be absent from her biology class for a full week. The substitute teacher not only followed the teacher’s lesson plans and her classroom rules (no gum chewing or hat wearing), she built a great rapport with Williams’ students.

“When I returned, my students were extremely pleased with themselves and the projects they completed,” says Williams. “I was amazed. I have never received such positive feedback from my students in response to a substitute teacher. It is wonderful to have a substitute willing to follow my lesson plans and lab instructions so valuable classroom time isn’t lost.”

Substitute teachers from Kelly Educational Staffing meet state and local certification requirements for any K-12 teaching situation in a public or private school. The company screens and checks the references of every candidate, conducts training and orientation, and offers an automated scheduling system for substitutes. “Staffing is what we do, so we have seen great success in filling classrooms when a permanent teacher needs to be absent for professional or personal reasons,” says Debbie Baldwin, national sales manager for Kelly Educational Staffing.

Utah State estimates that by the time students entering kindergarten today complete 12 years of public school, they will have spent the equivalent of one school year being taught by a substitute teacher. For a growing number of schools, that teacher will come from a staffing company and might even be ready to work the biology lab.

Mobile gaming – everything to play for

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Chances are that you or someone you know is affected by the mobile gaming virus. There is a lot of it about and developments in technology are helping it to spread like wildfire. Even if you do not consider yourself a gamer you could one day be exposed to its effects. All it takes is a Java-enabled mobile phone and there are already over 150 million of them in the US alone.

What we are really talking about of course is the growth in popularity of mobile gaming; in other words, playing games on your mobile phone. Mobile gaming is set to become big business in 2004 as the number of BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) and Java-enabled mobile phones in circulation continues to grow. In addition, manufacturers are continually adding colored screens and advanced features to their latest models, making mobile gaming a rich and vibrant experience for users.

The games themselves are readily available from a wide range of sources and can be easily downloaded from numerous web sites, with prices starting at $2.99 or less. There is something for everyone with games ranging from favorites such as PacMan, chess and checkers to motor racing, jet-skiing and even erotic games.

Many people consider online gaming to be a predominantly male activity and a young male activity at that. Last fall, at a conference on mobile gaming, Mark Stanger from game developers Eidos suggested that 92% of PlayStation 2 players are men. Whilst it is probably true that online and console gamers are mainly male (how many women do you know that own a Sony PlayStation 2) analysis suggests that mobile phone gaming could be encouraging a growing percentage of women to play games.

Downloading games to a mobile phone can be done from anywhere. Women do not need to venture into the testosterone-laden atmosphere of game shops and this may account for why an increasing number of females are entering the world of mobile gaming. Interestingly, it also appears that women are playing the more traditional games such as solitaire and backgammon rather than the ’shoot ‘em dead’ kind.

Just as more women are playing games, so to are an increasing number of older people. Figures from the Entertainment Software Association released in August 2003 indicate that a full 17% of game players are over age 50, up from 13% in 2000.

This would suggest that gamers are an increasingly diverse group and the appeal of gaming is spreading across the sexes and across different ages and socio-economic backgrounds. People seem to be more and more at ease playing games on consoles, online and now on mobile phones.

With growing awareness of mobile gaming, improved and ever-wider distribution channels for mobile games, and an increasing degree of comfort with payment and delivery over the air amongst subscribers, everything points to an explosion in growth. This translates into a multi-billion dollar market for providers of mobile technology, game developers and retailers and a completely new way of looking at mobile phones.

History’s Biggest Hoax – The Pyramid

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Malta and The Egyptian Savants:

Was it necessary to invade Egypt in order to gain access to the knowledge in the region and specifically on the Giza Plateau? Could the collectors and other insulated or perverted power-mongers of Europe really have been willing to rape and pillage these treasures through the use of war? I feel if it were only a matter of study the best place to do it would be in the region itself with the approval of the local authorities. Of course we have been lead to believe that people in other parts of the world were barbarians or uninformed about their own past. There is some truth in that, but that could also be said about the people of Europe and America who buy the propaganda and lies or religions that their leaders have used to get more power including the wars and other things we are addressing in this book. I understand this is a major statement I am making.

The museums of England and France are full of stolen goods! The savants really did little more than record the seized goods and the Rosetta Stone and other subsequent researches that we have been made more than merely aware of are not as important as the academics would like to believe or these academics are in on the thefts that included destruction of many great pieces of work. Good Englishmen galore would cut huge art-reliefs out of the sides of buildings or mountains. Sometimes when things could not be taken they would try to blow them up. Napoleon’s men (for example) dynamited the Great Pyramid but saw it would be too large a job. Academics like Mark Lehner and Zahi Hawass are still telling lies like the ones about a make-work program or the Pyramids at Giza were tombs for Pharaohs. Lehner would have us believe “Napoleon’s Wise Men Belzoni and Caviglia {were} Digging by Dynamite”. (7) Their involvement with the Edgar Cayce Foundation and Association for Research and Enlightenment (ARE) is something I have dealt with before. Suffice it to say Cayce was a Mason as was his father.

I believe the original builders of the Giza Complex were the very Jacobins or Stuart BEES and Merovingians that Napoleon took directions from. The extent to which they create wars like the French and American Revolutions to de-populate and confuse the average person is probably the most heinous continuing program that humanity has ever witnessed. Stuart historians trace their family back 20,000 years to the Saharan Berbers or Sea Peoples and the title of the Ptolemaic Pharaohs still included their names like Isis Pelasgi. Pelasgi has to do with Sea People. They knew about their ancient ancestor Isis.

The Ashmolean Museum still has five dodecahedron sculpted rocks dated to 1400 BCE which these people knew the Pyramid was a major part of in an ancient Earth Energy Grid System. Ashmole was a major Mason or alchemist in the Rosicrucian Royal Society. There also were many in their midst who knew Hebrew was a secret or sacerdotal Code just as the Mason Conor MacDari proved in his 1923 book called Irish Wisdom. But it was not until the mid-1990s that you would find academics agreeing that Hebrew is derived from Phoenician. I have many books and lots of research to back up these accusations which include the words of Winston Churchill (The Island Race) admitting they used The Black Plague to de-populate Europe. The hieroglyphic writings were not advanced language for the people and in 2001 Associated Press reported an earlier and more advanced common alphabet found in the Sahara. Flinders-Petrie wrote about such a language in his book The Formation of the Alphabet even before MacDari blew the whistle on his fellow Masons.

The Britannica even admits that Napoleon’s visit to Malta was a mysterious event. They could see that Napoleon was given Malta (British controlled like the rest of the Mediterranean Sea he had to travel through and keep supplies coming from). The treasures of Malta included some of the corporate booty that enterprises like Solomon’s had been gathering for many millennia of worldwide secret trade.

Eliminate Formatting in Outlook Or Outlook Express

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

I often use copy and paste to take content from one e-mail and add it to another. Because of the cost of ink and the limited knowledge of some of my friends, I usually like to make fonts smaller and change them from color to black. But I often have a hard time changing both the font and the color, and sometimes I can’t do either. I’m wondering whether this has something to do with the originator’s programs. In any case, I’d appreciate any help that you can offer in this area.

Whether you reply or copy/paste, cleaning up formatting in HTML-based e-mail messages can be tough. Just because the sender liked pale green text against a background of clouds doesn’t mean your reply needs to be equally illegible. The easiest solution is to convert the message to plain text and then, if desired, back to HTML. To do that in Outlook, you would select Format | Plain Text from the message’s menu, click Yes to confirm you want to discard the formatting, and then select Format | HTML. Using just the keyboard, you can accomplish this by typing Alt-O, T, Y, Alt-O, H. In Outlook Express, you’d select Format | Plain Text, click OK to confirm, then select Format | Rich Text (HTML). Again, this would be Alt+O, X, Spacebar, Alt+O, and R on the keyboard. Once you’ve removed the unwanted formatting, you can format the remaining text any way you please.

Better Internal Proposals

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

A colleague of mine has a problem. We belong to the same association and he’s been trying for quite some time, without success, to get support for one of his proposals.

His lack of results came to mind when a reader asked for ideas about making internal proposals more effective. As she noted in her message, it’s necessary to make a business case for proposals, including costs and returns.

She’s right, and I agree wholeheartedly. In fact I just finished a proposal to an organization I work with and had it accepted on that sort of basis.

But, I think all good proposals start where my colleague has trouble. They start with a clear and concise statement about the project: “This is what I recommend, this is the issue (problem or opportunity) it addresses, and these are the consequences (benefits) of doing what I recommend.”

I frequently come across situations where ideas don’t fly because the person making the proposal hasn’t prepared that kind of analysis and statement. While the virtue of the ideas seems apparent to him or to her, it’s not at all apparent to others. I’ve referred to it elsewhere as the ‘Everybody knows’ syndrome.

To do the analysis, and later write the statement, start with a description of the action that you want taken. In just a few words, write down the what you want to see happen, and how it changes the status quo. For example, I recently went to a meeting with a proposal that went like this: Change the duration of our event to four weeks from the current duration of six weeks, to reduce our costs during a slow period.

Next, name or list the people or functions involved. Who will take the action? Do you want just one person to act, or several, or many? And, if it involves a multi-stage action, set out the stages. For example, “I would like this committee to formulate a recommendation we can put to a vote at the annual meeting.”

Follow that with a list of people and organizations affected by the action. Be thorough in this consideration; it’s all to easy to forget the peripheral players. And very often peripheral players make a critical difference to our plans.

Now, is there a timeline or sequence of events that needs consideration before a decision can be made or implemented? Almost everything we do in large modern organizations is interconnected to other people and resources. And, what about contingencies? Does your proposal depend on something else happening?

Having thoroughly explored the proposal and its implications, we now turn to costs and benefits, the business case. What are the tangible and intangible costs? In the intangibles column, make at least a mental note of the emotional costs that key stakeholders will pay. The same is generally true of benefits, or the returns if we’re talking about financial components. Remember the important role emotions often play in decisions.

In summary, then, take a strategic approach to internal proposals, an approach that identifies the issues, the players, and the consequences. This exercise allows you to be clear and concise because you have thought your way through the proposal carefully, and you know the key issues.

5 Factors to Consider on Choose the Best Online Phone Cards

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Before starting to learn how to find Best Prepaid Phone Cards for your Domestic and International Long Distance calling needs, lets see what factors are important to choose the right Phone Cards. First of all I want to tell you One Truth: in general there is NO such a think as “the Best Phone Card”. It all depends on your specific calling needs, habits and purposes: (To) Where You Call? , Who Calls?, Whom You Call?, From Where You Call? and How You Call?. Most likely not all of these will apply to you (usually one or two factors apply). By taking a moment on reading and comparing several cards’ Terms/Conditions and Charging Fees, based on your calling needs, you will be able to choose the Right Card and use it over and over and SAVE BIG.

1) (To) Where You Call?-this means what country or what specific city in that country you wand to call.
Once you go to most of the Online Phone Cards Companies’ Home Pages (For Ex. http://www.PhoneCardsGallery.com -by the way this is the website, from where I do almost all my online phone card purchases.), somewhere you can find “Discount Calling Card Finder” or similar section. In the “country” box choose your calling country & submit your search. The site’s searching tool will find all the cards which provide calling services to your country and will organize the cards with the highest calling minutes to the lowest minutes (Top Ranking). Now we know which cards give the best calling minutes to your country, but very important to consider the cards “Qualities” also ( in http://www.PhoneCardsGallery.com the Quality shows by Blue Stars next to the Cards’ names”). Always give preferences to those cards which have better Qualities. Having Local Access Numbers (for the State or City that you are located or you calling from) is also very important. It is recommended to choose a card that has Local Access numbers. Usually, by using Toll Free 1-800 number, instead of Local Access numbers, additional Per Minute Charges may apply. Some cards that have Local Access #s, in the card’s detail page, will provide a link (“Local Numbers”) to the new page with the list of all available Local Access #. Others the will provide (by Automated Answering Service) the Local Access # when you call by using their Toll Free # and choosing “yes” to their question: “Do you need Local Access # ?” In this case, after you get Local Access #, you need to hang up and call using given Local #.

2) Who Calls?- this means if you are using regular phone or payphone to make your calls. If you are using a payphone, in the cards’ terms check if they charge additional fees for using a payphone, how much it is and compare with other cards to make your decision.

3) Whom You Call?- this means if you are calling to a regular phone or to a cell phone. If you are calling to a cell phone, in the Terms check if they charge different rates for cell phones and make your decision accordingly.

4) From Where You Call?- this means from which country (USA or Canada), State or City you are calling from. Some cards you can use only from certain states or cities and that usually very easy to notice: either card’s name include that state’s or city’s name (Ex. Crazy-Crazy Los Angeles) or nest to the card’s name it says the name of the state or the city for which that card is designed for. Usually those cards have Local Access #s for that state, county or city. If you see that the card, beside 800 #, has Local Access # also, then it means that the card is specialize or designed for that specific area only. Some cards could work only from specified location (state) and in the detail page of those cards, on the “Toll Free” line will say “(Works From X State Only!)”. So, be careful and do not buy these types of cards if you are not in that state. So, make your decision accordingly, and choose the cards that specialize on your state or city. Many cards have No Local Access numbers (they have only Toll Free #) and you can use them from any states.

5) How You Call? – This means that what are your calling durations and frequencies: are you going to make a few long calls with your card or many short calls? If you are planning to make one or two long phone calls, then the most important factor that you will need to consider is Calling Rate (or Calling Time). You will need to choose the cards that give higher calling minutes (same as lower calling rates). The Connection Fees, Maintenance Fees, Communication Fees, Minute Rounding Rates, Expiration Date and other similar fees and factors are not so important and relevant for long calls. However, those mentioned fees and factors are very important to consider if you going to make many (frequently) short calls. You may consider getting cards with comparably lesser calling minutes (higher rates) but minimum charges for above mentioned fees. In this case you also will need to prefer cards with longer Expiration Date and smaller rates for Minute Rounding. Therefore, the card with higher calling time is not necessary is the best card for you if you are planning to make short calls. To make frequent short calls, you will need a card with No Connection Fee, Minimum or No charges for Maintenance, Communication and also smaller number for Rounding Minutes. Generally short calls are those which are lasting less than 15 min.

By considering all the above mentioned factors and options, now you are able to choose the right cards that will SAVE you the most money. There are numerous prepaid phone cards out there and yes, there are some major differences between the fees they charge. If you are serious about getting the most out of your hard earned dollars, take the time and just one time compare different cards and choose the best one for your needs. Once you found the best one for your needs, you can use the same card over and over and SAVE MONEY and TIME.

Buying phone cards over the internet is safe, very convenient, cheap (mostly they sale with discounts) and profitable (they provide very useful tools which help users to compare and find the best cards (good rates, high qualities & having other important fetchers) for their different calling needs).

Finding a Computer Repair Shop You Can Trust

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Your have a computer repair that needs to get done right away. You are ready to take it anywhere. Question is, where should you take it? Does it really matter where you take it? I would suggest that it does. Here are some things you may have not considered before.

What kind of turn around time do they have? Some computer repair shops will take two to three weeks to return your computer to you. Are you ready to be without your computer for that long? If not, shop around. There are computer repair shops that can get your computer back to you in as little as a few hours. Some of these faster companies can charge more but the speed is worth it if you are working on a big project that has to get done right away.

What do they charge for their hourly fee? Some companies charge really high fees and take a really long time to get the computer back to you. You want to take your repair to a computer repair shop that will be quick and will do the repair right the first time. Look for a computer repair shop that posts their prices. Most shops have a set price list for specific tasks. Look for a company that can give you a solid quote before they start their work. You should also make sure they will contact you for approval if there is any reason to increase their repair bill before they start the repair.

Is their staff A+ certified? The A+ certification doesn’t guarantee that the computer technician knows what he is doing but it is generally a good indicator that they have invested the time into their craft to do it well. You should also find out if everyone on staff is A+ certified or only certain staff. Ask to have the certified staff do the work.

Trust your gut. If after talking with someone at the shop in person you don’t get a good feeling about them, walk away. In any given town there are many people who do computer repairs. Don’t be afraid of shopping around.

Who Should Solve VoIP Security Issues?

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Around a dozen WiFi VoIP handsets and deskphones have been put to the test by top security professionals, who say that security problems range from potential DoS attacks to more serious issues that allow “deep access” to the handset that lets a remote attacker get hold of any sensitive information on the phone.

Problems like this inevitable. So where is the onus to prevent such problems? it has been posited that if we see practices like this develop as these devices get more popular then the manufacturers will only have themselves to blame when the security backlash comes back to haunt them.

VoIP hacking is the contemporary version of war dialing – a method of automatically scanning telephone numbers using a modem, often dialing every phone number in a local area to find where computers or fax machines are available, then attempting to access them by guessing passwords.

Still there are actions users can take to protect themselves. Here’s a list of WiFi VOIP security issues, and some useful ways to protect against them:

Many points of attack:
As the phones get more sophisticated, so could the points of entry for would be hackers. Email, client Web browsers, Bluetooth, SMS, WiFi, media players, and image viewers could all open back doors for hackers. Though users can use open-source as well as commercial tools to continually test their phones and networks, they’ll ultimately have to rely on vendors to also do proactive testing on these VoIP phones.

Targeting phones in public environments:
One way of doing this is a Bluetooth scanner could be concealed at the entrance to a major public space and be used to grab user data. It may be best to keep Bluetooth and other wireless features swicthed off when not needed.

Rogue access points:
Other than this when at the office or on the road, users will have to keep their guard up and scan for rogue access points. Hackers will set up access points to target specifically WiFi phones in the corporate space as well as at hotels and other places business people like to get together. Good device authentication and encryption can help provide protection here.

Specific attacks:
Select attacks on specific voice-over-wireless networks can also be an issue, albeit one that the victims may prefer to keep quiet.
