Doors of Awareness to Optimal Health and Fitness(Part 1 of 2)

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

A door stands before you. The door may be a book on health and fitness, women’s health issues, diet and nutrition, health food, or a weight loss program. The door may be a motivational health public speaking event. The door may be a friend sharing her enthusiasm about her fast weight loss by just eating common sense healthy foods and exercising every day. The door may be a doctor’s recent diagnosis.

No matter which door it is, you take a deep breath and open it up, not knowing what lies beyond it. All you know is that you are ready for a change. You feel that if you do not do something, and do something now, your body, your health, and, therefore, your very life will spiral downward.

To your delight, you step over the threshold into a bright, new world. You discover what you are made of and what promotes your physical health and fitness. With determination and self-discipline, you gather the knowledge and change your thinking. With the change of thinking, you change your food habits.

Your daily diet now includes lots of whole, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, raw nuts and seeds, and legumes. You gradually gravitated away from all animal and dairy products. You no longer crave or eat chocolate or sugar and white flour goodies. You lose your desire to eat processed foods, refined foods, fast foods, junk foods and all drinks with the exception of water and homemade fruit and vegetable juices.

You exercise every day. You get adequate sleep, rest, and relaxation. You avoid coffee, alcohol, and other toxins. You lose that extra weight. You take fewer, if any, pills. You have higher energy. Your days are filled with fun and purposeful activities of your choosing. You feel better than ever, and you glow with health and vibrancy.

You had no idea that walking through that first door would lead to a total transformation of your physical body. You also had no idea that the transformation of your physical body would lead you to a second door.

And now a second door stands before you, and you open it up. Because your physical health and fitness, the “what” part of your health, have reached an optimum level, you now have the emotional stability and mental clarity and self-insight to discover the “who” part of your health.

Because you are no longer bogged down with aches, pains, conditions, lack of mobility, extra weight, and loss of energy, you are able to explore who you are. What are your values? What are your priorities? What are your philosophies? Where is your life going? Who do you want to spend your time with? What is important to you? What is not important to you?

And as you explore the “who?” part of you, you come upon a third door.

“What could lie behind that third door?” you wonder.

Natural Remedies that Work to Boost Your Memory

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Natural supplements are gaining popularity as they work towards improving many aspects of health and well-being.

There are supplements available that aid in memory clarity and have a positive effect on boosting memory. These remedies are derived from substances that occur naturally and have been consumed in one form or another for centuries.

Their impact on body functions proven over time and their ability to aid in clearing a cloudy memory are worth investigating.

A bit of research will reveal one supplement that seems to lead the pack when it comes to keeping a person’s ability to remember at its highest level. That supplement is Gingko Biloba Extract.

The reason that it’s thought to have such a significant impact on memory function is that it helps with the flow of blood throughout the body.

This of course includes the flow of blood to the brain. Blood contains oxygen and having a steady and constant flow of blood keeps the memory sharp.

There are numerous different brand names of supplements that proclaim to be the best source of Gingko Biloba Extract therefore it’s up the potential consumer to decide which one is best suited for their needs.

Another supplement that appears to offer benefits in the memory department is rosemary. Rosemary is often thought of as a spice we use when cooking. The effects of it as a herbal supplement are interesting.

Rosemary works as a way of stimulating the brain. Keeping the brain stimulated is essential in making certain that memory is working correctly.

There are different varieties of supplements that contain rosemary and checking the dosage and strength is always recommended.

Many of the natural remedies that offer benefits in memory function work towards other health goals as well. An example of this is green tea. Green tea is becoming a natural cure for many ailments or conditions.

It’s thought to have a positive effect on memory function and along with black tea when consumed in moderation seems to help in optimizing a person’s ability to remember.

Ginseng also seems related to improved memory function. Ginseng is a herb that is often associated with improving energy and people who are aging swear by its ability to revitalize.

If it has this profound effect on other parts of the body it would seem reasonable that it would work as a booster to the mind and the memory.

There are several different supplements that can be purchased that contain ginseng and it’s important to weight the benefits of the other ingredients when choosing one that is specifically formulated in helping with memory function.

For people who are just beginning to feel the signs of memory loss, possibly because of age or in some cases with the stress of everyday life small details seem to slip the mind, taking a natural supplement can be the ideal solution.

They generally offer fewer side effects than traditional medication along with substantial benefits that reach well beyond their memory boosting attributes.

CortiCarb3000 Reviewed: Does It Perform As Promised?

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Carbohydrate blockers seem to have come and gone with the low carb craze. Basic carbohydrate blockers are available everywhere. CortiCarb3000 was introduced last year with little fan fare or marketing. Dynamic Nutritional Research seemed to have known something many did not.

Weight gain can stem from multiple sources. Studies have shown that diets high in carbohydrates and fat are not ideal. A reasonable, sound diet combined with exercise is the best option. Gone are the days when one could expect the miracle pill to solve the battle of the bulge. A realistic approach has risen the forefront of logical thinking. When evaluating supplements in the carbohydrate-blocking category, I looked for products claiming to provide multiple benefits. Dynamic Nutritional Research claims that they have created a true supplement that can be incorporated into a positive lifestyle program.

CortiCarb can be taken to inhibit the carbohydrate overload often associated with desserts, pastas, and breads. CortiCarb3000 is also designed to fight and offset the affects of stress, which can include binge eating. The overproduction of the stress hormone has been associated with weight gain and manufacturers have dramatically presented this to the public over the last year. Finally, CortiCarb3000 naturally boosts your metabolism as well.

This is where CortiCarb3000 sets itself apart from traditional carbohydrate blockers. Let’s look at the ingredients in this formula. CortiCarb3000 contains White Kidney Bean Extract, which has been shown to safely inhibit the absorption of carbohydrates. Their website lists clinical studies supporting these mechanisms of action to further boost the foundation of their product.

CortiCarb3000 also contains St. Johns Wort and Valerian Root powder, 2 proven ingredients over the ages, which reduce the affects of stress and provide a lasting sense of calm. CortiCarb3000 claims to be so effective because it also includes Green Tea Extract, which boosts your metabolism and helps you burn more calories. This precise combination of ingredients provides the consumer with a supplement to control carbohydrate intake, control the affects of stress, and increase the rate by which you burn calories, all of without the jittery feeling of some other diet aids. CortiCarb3000 has proven to be more than just a carbohydrate blocker. CortiCarb3000 did not get caught up in hype. Dynamic Nutritional Research does not claim to control Cortisol. CortiCarb3000 includes stress-relieving ingredients, which have stood the test of time and produce calming affects. CortiCarb3000 appears to be a quality supplement, which adds additional benefits to a rather outdated category.

How To Pray The Rosary

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Many years ago, I attended a Catholic mass with a (non-Catholic) boy I was dating at the time. When leaving the church, my boyfriend turned to me and asked why we were constantly changing positions as the priest spoke. To be honest, I didn’t have an answer for him. After attending church weekly (or twice weekly when school was in session) for so many years, the words can often become rote, and when to sit, stand, or kneel is almost a Pavlovian response. To this day, I don’t know the reason behind all of the motions, but in spite of attending various churches over many years, the movements have been consistent in all of them.

Many of the Catholic practices have evolved over time, and how to pray the rosary is one example. Most Catholics believe that the Rosary prayer originated when the Virgin Mary appeared before St. Dominic (the founder of the Dominicans) in the early 1200s with a wreath of roses which she used to teach him to pray the rosary. Although, today’s Catholics use Rosaries, pocket Rosaries, or Rosary bracelets rather than wreaths of roses, the basic form of saying the Rosary has remained nearly unchanged in the eight centuries since Mary taught it to St. Dominic.

Begin by making the sign of the cross (briefly touching the fingertips of your right hand to your forehead, the center of your chest over your heart, your left shoulder, and finally your right shoulder while reciting, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”)

Next Recite the Apostle’s Creed.
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth
Of all that is seen and unseen.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.
Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
And born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again,
He ascended into heaven
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting.
Amen

The Apostle’s Creed is followed by the Our Father prayer

Our Father who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
Now and forever.
Amen

After saying the Our Father once, recite the Hail Mary prayer three times.

Hail Mary full of grace
The Lord is with Thee.
Blessed are Thou amongst women
And blessed is the fruit of they womb, Jesus
Holy Mary, mother of God,
Pray for us sinners
Now and at the hour of our deaths.
Amen

Follow this with a single recitation of the Glory Be to the Father prayer.

Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning,
Is now and ever shall be
World without end.
Amen

After these prayers are said at the beginning, the following prayers are repeated for each of five decades. Recite the Our Father prayer once, followed by the Hail Mary prayer ten times, and the Glory Be to the Father prayer. Although these prayers can be said without accompaniment, most Catholics use a Rosary, Rosary bracelet, pocket Rosary, or Rosary ring to track the prayers on the beads while praying.

Rosaries, pocket Rosaries, and Rosary bracelets are offered in a large variety of materials ranging from inexpensive plastic and string beaded rosaries to more ornate designs which incorporate lampwork glass beads, Swarovski crystals, and gemstones such as black onyx or amethyst. Some rosary bracelets even incorporate more unusual materials like Bali silver to show that even a religious piece of jewelry rooted in centuries of tradition does not need to look traditional.

What is Righteousness? – Part 1

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

The scope of this parable of Jesus addresses the subject of righteousness. In the scenario He presents we see two men who goes to the temple to pray. We know who they are and for whom the message was intended.

It was not the appropriate time for public prayer but these two men went up to the temple (which stood on top of a hill) to engage in personal devotion which was customary at that time. One man was a Pharisee and the other a Publican. Now the Pharisees were known for their ability to pray long prayers, but oftentimes meaningless. They were, if you will, master of words. Furthermore, they were what I would call “religious perfectionists.” They had a rule to govern their religious life and we know some of them sought to live up to it. This particular Pharisee stood tall. He apparently lived a clean and respectable life and took care of all his temple obligations. He was indeed a good man – as least to himself.

The publican and the Pharisee went up into the temple to pray but they were not friends. They lived in two different worlds. The Pharisee would not dare consider the publican, a mere tax collector, on par with himself. The publican was dirt under his feet.

They were not friends though they were both seeking the favor of almighty God. The Pharisee in his prayer thanked God he was not like the publican. He wanted God to know that the publican was something less than himself and so he prays: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like …this tax collector. Luke 18:11.

What I have said in many of my articles bears repeating. When a man stands before God, his true nature is revealed. What we are in the real sense of the word comes to surface. We do not have to tell God who we are, He KNOWS. He knows the mind and heart of man. In His presence, we cannot bluff. Most men feel in their hearts that they are just – until they meet God. Then they discover sometimes to their great surprise, how far removed from God they really are. No iota of sin escapes God’s notice. Every Christian is a sinner saved by grace. We are not perfect or sinless, we are saved. Isaiah put it this way: We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; Isaiah 64:6a. This is shocking but what the prophet is saying is that righteousness from our stand point is nothing in the sight of God. Isaiah knew well what he was talking about because he himself had been in the presence of God. You recall in 6:1 when he said, “In the year that King Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.” In that same year and at the same time Isaiah said of himself, “Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts” (6.5).

Now, you can see why the publican’s prayer went straight to the heart of God and the Pharisee’s prayer fell on deaf ears. When we seek the presence of a Holy God we must do so in utter humility. Who are we to address God in any other fashion?

So what is righteousness? Well, let’s begin by addressing what it is not. Righteousness is not simple goodness. Goodness is an element of righteousness but in itself is not righteousness. Goodness is just goodness. I have talked with people for hours on their goodness. “I try to do the right things, I try to be a good person, I do good things.” This is fine. Goodness is a commendable thing. A good clean life, if you will, is what God loves and men respect. Certainly superlative goodness is a rich asset in one’s life. But, righteousness is not simple goodness.

The Pharisee was good; they did not come any better. Any man who could stand in the presence of another and say what he said without fear of contradiction is indeed a good man. He said he was not an extortionist; he did not do anything unlawful. He did not oppress his debtors, He was law abiding in everyway and in everything. He was not unjust. He claimed to be fair and kind to all. He was not an adulterer. His marriage vows of faithfulness were untarnished. Not many people can publicly make these assertions without fear of being caught in a lie.

The Pharisee was a good man, but mere goodness in no key to the Kingdom of God. Righteousness is not simple goodness.

Righteousness is not being different for the sake of being different. In other words, just to say I am different from others does not mean one is righteous or justified in the sight of God. You see, it is not a matter of being different but rather what constitutes that difference and in what regard. There are thousands of people who are perfect in their living but vile in tempter and mean in heart. The Pharisee looked down on the publican with utter contempt and hatred. At this point, the Pharisee, a perfectly good man, different from the general run of men, became unacceptable to God. You cannot serve God and look down on your fellow man.

Broadband – Description

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Broadband is a general term for any technology that transfers data over a broad bandwidth connection. Such a connection allows for much higher transmission speed and quality than its low bandwidth equivalent.

Broadband technology can be used for a variety of different purposes, including high speed internet access (e.g. Cable, DSL, T1, etc.), and VoIP (broadband phone) connections.

Back Up Your Data or Lose Your Life!

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Oh the perils of collecting those precious photos on your PC for years, only to have your hard drive crash one day, and not have made a SINGLE BACKUP COPY of any of your priceless pictures. Well, now is the time to backup your hard drive. A few simple steps will set you on your way…so let’s not think about it anymore: let’s DO it.

There are several ways you can backup your PC data.
1.)CD’s and DVD’s are one of the simplest ways to go. It’s a very simple process to pop in a CD-ROM and burn a copy of your important information, but there’s a catch: you’ll have to be disciplined enough to do this on a regular basis. You’ll also have to burn new CD’s weekly in order to keep up with the new information you’ve just stored on your PC for the past week and this can get rather expensive as you go out to buy new CD-ROMS every month. So there are other solutions…
2.)Another way to go, is to purchase an external hard drive. You can drag and rop all of our new data onto your hard drive and it will replace the old data. This way you don’t have to burn new CD’s or DVD’s for each backup. However, you still have to be disciplined enough to remember to do this each week…so there is yet another solution.
3.)If you have Windows XP Professional, you can use what is called Microsoft Backup, a utility that lets you create backups of data that you choose and be able to run these backups on schedule. The only disadvantage to using Microsoft Backup is that you must use your backups with the same operating system. For example, if your Windows ME hard drive crashed, you couldn’t use a backup you created there in Windows XP.

So, there you have several ways you can backup your PC data and be safe. Keep in mind that despite the disadvantages of CD-ROM and DVD backup (purchasing new CD’s and performing backups regularly), you can’t beat the fact that CD’s and DVD’s last for years and are transportable, which is great for traveling.
If you’re anything like me, you probably have a whole slew of information stored on your PC, much of which is personal in nature (such as family pics), and most of which is business-related (which is crucial to your business success).
Being sure that you select at least one method of backup is your first step. Your second step is to make sure you follow through with this plan each and every week.
Remember, consistency is key.
Back up your data, and save your life!

Unless specified otherwise – all commands listed need to be executed from the command line on your server.

How to start, stop or restart Apache (commands need to be executed from the command line)?

Restart: “/etc/rc.d/init.d/apachectl restart”

Stop: “/etc/rc.d/init.d/apachectl stop”

Start: “/etc/rc.d/init.d/apachectl start”

Where is the Apache httpd.conf file located?

“/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf”

How many Apache processes are running on your server at any given time?

“ps auwx |grep httpd |wc -l”

Where is the Apache error log located on the server?

“/var/log/httpd/error_log”

Where is the Apache status log file located on the server?

“/var/log/httpd/access_log”
