S*** Happens

It’s no surprise, but it’s part of the game, and it’s something you’ll have to learn to accept. Sometimes, you’re just going to lose at poker. No one, not even the greatest pro, can even imagine a game where you never lose. It just happens like that every once in a while. And it’ll be bad. You’ll be pissed. You’ll maybe swear, maybe cuss some more. And boy does it make you mad. But then you have to step back and ask, why did you lose? It’s more beneficial than you think. Sometimes it’s not winning a lot that makes you realize how you can get better. I’m not talking about bad beats. Those are bound to happen. Statistics are just statistics, and sometimes that 2% chance happens. That’s called variance. But when you lose because of your own fault. Well that’s a learning experience. What you do from there at the casino up to you. Do you let it up to the fates to decide whether or not you win in that situation again? Or, if you’re a true poker player, do you look at how you bet, how they bet, what you lost to, and search out the real “why” of why you lost. Reflection is an important skill in poker. Just as mechanics will take you far, so will reflection on your play. Because if it wasn’t a bad beat, then chances are it was something you did, not your opponent, that let him stay around and beat you.
